Prowess Center

Prowess is a collaboration between UC San Diego and Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) and is supported by the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute. The Center functions as a hub to facilitate a broad set of collaborations between UC San Diego and LANL with government agencies, companies, community organizations, and other UC campuses. SCIL serves as an innovation partner to Prowess, contributing experience in developing cyberinfrastructure and science-driven technologies with the fire management community.

California Office of Emergency Services

The Fire Integrated Real-time Intelligence System (FIRIS) is a public-private partnership program that provides real-time intelligence data and analysis on emerging disaster incidents in California. Funded by the California Office of Emergency Services, the funding supports aircraft, a common operating picture, and near-real-time fire modeling in collaboration with SCIL's WIFIRE program that is available at the onset of emerging incidents. The FIRIS program can be utilized at no cost to other agencies.

The collaboration between SCIL's WIFIRE program and SDG&E works to serve the current and evolving need for utility weather forecasters and wildland fire researchers cross-trained in the areas of data, artificial intelligence (AI), fire and weather science, and critical infrastructure protection. Active areas of work include the use of data in utility wildfire mitigation, safety strategies for tree hazard analysis and prediction, weather/fuel/lightning-related risk modeling, and grid infrastructure failure modeling.
